Rare extract fromthe Senate Record of January 11, 1816, with Commodore Stephen Decatur reportingon his successful naval expedition of 1815 to deal with the Barbary corsairswho had been raiding U.S. merchant ships while the U.S. was preoccupied by theWar of 1812. With the end of that war and an expanded Navy, Decatur was able toconduct what is known as the Second Barbary War against the corsairs ofAlgiers, Tunis, and Tripoli, freeing captives and ships, and putting an end toAmerica’s payment of tribute.
