History of Waldensian Wines:

In 1929, Jean-Pierre AugustDalmas, a Waldensian immigrant from Villar Pellice, Italy, cleared a field fora vineyard on his property in Valdese, Burke County, North Carolina. Until hisdeath in 1972 at age 92, he made wine every fall in the basement of the mainhouse on his property.

After his death, the winemaking operation was moved into the top of the old dairy barn. In 1986,Jean-Pierre’s youngest son, Edward Albert Dalmas, who largely underwrote thewine-making business, died at age 62. Faced with the possibility of having togive up the annual fall making of wine, the surviving sons along with threefriends started Waldesin Heritage Winery, which evolved into creating winesfrom berries, peaches, apples, and other locally sourced fruits.

The end of prohibition in1933 and the creation of the North Carolina’s ABC Commission provided theopportunity for wineries to reopen and thrive. Original winemaker andproprietor Mellie Bernard created Bernard’s Waldensian Style Wines in 1935.Mellie embraced the local culture of making wines by the Waldensians in thesmall town of Valdese and launched his own winery in neighboring Icard. Hefiled for a patent for his label (the one on my bottle) as Mellie C. Bernard, tradingas The Waldensian Winery, Icard, N.C. on April 23, 1936.

In 1948, there were twoalcohol related deaths in Burke County which resulted in legislation that madeit a dry county. No alcohol could be produced or sold in the county. Withoutanother option, Mellie was left with over 6,000 gallons of wine he was nolonger able to sell. I cannot find what happened to this wine.

Until November, 2019, the Waldensian stylewines remained alive through the Waldensian Heritage Winery and WaldensianStyle Wines. For 40 years volunteers from the community came out to help makethe wine.

In 2019, the grandchildren ofJean-Pierre Dalmas bought the winery and returned the land and buildings backinto the Dalmas Estate. The winery is now an events venue that offers threedifferent settings for your special event: the old chicken house now La CasaGallina, the old dairy barn now The Tasting Room, and a large building now LeGrand Batiment.
