The Portuguese Legion (LP) GOC GCA constituted a national organization, integrating a militia, which functioned during the period of the Estado Novo in Portugal.
The LP was a state body, usually dependent on the Ministry of the Interior. In case of war or serious emergency could pass to the dependence of the Minister of National Defense.
The Portuguese, of both sexes, over 18 years of age who took, under oath, the commitment to serve the Nation in harmony with the purposes of the movement that generated the organization could belong to the LP. The members of the LP formed the national legionary movement. The legionnaires with military training and being part of the LP forces constituted the legionary militia.Created in 1936 with the aim of \"defending the spiritual heritage of the Nation and combating the communist threat and anarchism\", from the 1940s the LP became essentially a civil defense organization. The LP was abolished on the same day of April 25, 1974.
