Hello - For your consideration, a French M35 water canteen, 2 liters. This design was accepted in 1935 to replace the older mle.1877/15 canteen which had two spouts. The newer bottle featured only one large spout. This example is very straight, no dings, dents, cracks or any other damages. Tinning has worn off with mild surface corrosion, but no real rust or rust-throughs. Seams and solders are intact, as are the strap swivels. This comes without cover, straps or cork.
The nice part - this one still has it's manufacture's mark and year of manufacture: SIF 1940. Faintly visible, but there.VERY difficult to find such a solid and intact example with a date because these were very lightly stamped on the tinning, and most often than not, the tinning wore off. I suspect the issue wool covers had something to do with wearing off the finish, as the material sometimes attracted moister in humid conditions, that and friction.
A reproduction cover, carrier straps and cork can be found at the excellent French site: Nicecollection if you so choose. However, I left it as is for display because of the rare date mark.
