This is an original Vietnam War United States Navy dress blues wool jumper named to K.E. Gillespie. Mr.Gillespie served aboard the USS GRAYLING during the Vietnam War as a torpedo man's mate. He joined the United States Navy in 1968 at the height of the Vietnam War and served aboard many ships until he was transferred to the USS GRAYLING. The USS GRAYLING(SSN-646) was a sturgeon class attack submarine that was launched by the United States Navy on June 22, 1967, during the start of US involvement in the Vietnam War. The USS GRAYLING played a vital role in the under-water force of the US Navy and will contribute to "keeping the peace" over global water during a time of intense conflict across the world. This new type of submarine at the time was made to attack and destroy all types of enemy ships. Using nuclear power the USS GRAYLING was able to embark on several reconnaissance missions to gain information on the Russians without surfacing or resupplying. The USS GRAYLING, while much is not known of her actions due to national security concerns, played a vital role in the United States' success in the Cold War against communism in means of reconnaissance and surveillance. For this, the USS GRAYLING received many awards for battle efficiency due to her combat preparedness if war was to break out even though it never did. After almost 30 years of service, the USS GRAYLING was decommissioned by the US Navy in 1997. As a torpedo man's mate, Gillespie was responsible for the maintenance and operation of submarine torpedoes. Gillespie served aboard the USS GRAYLING during the Vietnam War from 1970-1972 after getting discharged at the rate of petty officer second class torpedo man's mate. The jumper itself is in almost brand-new condition and has no tears or holes despite being over 50 years old. The jumper was manufactured by Centre Manufacturers in 1971 as a part of a government contract for the Vietnam War. On the back, the jumper is named to Mr.Gillespie and the jumper is a size 36 Regular. On the the right sleeve is a petty officer second class rate and on the left sleeve is the USS GRAYLING ship tab. Underneath the ship tab is a wool “E” patch to designate one of the many USS GRAYLING’S battle efficiencies. Which demonstrated a ship's or crew's ability to be prepared for combat demonstrated through training and battle games of the US Navy.Authorizing all personnel of the ship or unit to wear an “E” for battle efficiency. This is not an easy award to get for a ship and shows the determination and efficiency of a United States Naval unit or ship. As mentioned this Vietnam War wool jumper is In phenomenal condition despite being 50 years old. This is a great piece of US Navy submarine history from the Cold War which American submarines played a vital role in winning for the United States.
