GUSTON, PHILIP (MODERN ART). Original Autograph Letter Signed by Artist Philip Guston. 2 pages, 7 inches by 10 1/2 inches, 1946. Original Autograph Letter Signed by artist Philip Guston to an administrator of an art school named Mr. Church who had offered him a position as artist-in-residence the previous March. The letter is dated May 14, 1946 and outlines Guston’s interest in hearing more about the position after his work in his current position has come to an end, having accepted a position for the 1946-47 school year. As Guston writes in part: “Your plan for having an artist-in-residence for the full school year interests me; although I must say that I am more sympathetic to the quarter term appointment. I have already accepted the position here for the 1946-47 school year but beyond that time my plans are open.” Mr. Guston was employed as an art instructor at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri from 1946 to 1947. Prior to that he served as an artist-in-residence at the School of Art and Art History at the University of Iowa from 1941 to 1945. Philip Guston (1913 - 1980) was a Canadian American painter, printmaker, muralist, and draftsman - frequently depicting racism, anti-Semitism, fascism, and American identity. Crease from folding and two tiny staple holes in the upper left corner, else fine.
