Original 1954 press photo Air Force Major Arthur "Kit" Murry when he made the World Altitude Record of 50,000 ft in the Bell X-1A over Edwards Air Force Base.

Original caption on back of photo: "BREAKS WORLD ALTITUDE RECORD-- Los Angeles, Calif. -- Aviation circles reported today that Major Arthur Murray (shown) reached a height of around 50,000 feet last month to set a new world altitude record. Air Force Secretary Harold Talbott announced the new record at the Air Force Association Convention at Omaha over the weekend, but did not elaborate because of security regulations. The flight was made over Edwards Air Force Base, the Mojave Desert Flight Test Center where numberous secret tests have been made and are being made. The plane used for the climb was the Bell X-1A, the stubby "Flying Laboratory," in which Maj. Charles Yeager last December set a piloted craft speed record of 1,650 miles an hour. For the altitude test, the X-1A was taken 33,000 feet into the air, to conserve its fuel, and then launched from the belly of a B-26. 8-24-54."
