Description:This is a vintage (circa 1905) postcard entitled, "Floyd Wallace and the Captive Balloon". The card depicts Floyd Wallace and a photo of him ascending in a balloon from the Oneonta, New York fairgrounds. The balloon escaped its tether and drifted into the sky with Wallace on board. Wallace climbed to the top of the balloon and cut the balloon fabric, allowing the hot air to escape. He ascending some 30 miles away near the town of Summit, New York. Floyd is shown with the knife that saved his life. Text printed on the card reads: "Floyd Wallace and his captive balloon which escaped Sept. 20th at the Oneonta (NY) Fair, carrying him 30 miles through the air to Summit. In his hand is the knife with which he cut the balloon, climbing the ropes above the basket to accomplish the feat, allowing the gas to escape." Publisher/Photographer: Published in 1905 by Henry Saunders, Oneonta, New York. Postmark:1905 - Oneonta, New York. Text:"One of the most exciting events of the fair last week.
