Ohio Stadium is the home of the Ohio State Buckeyesfootball team and is located on the campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus,Ohio. The stadium was added to the National Register of Historic Places by the NationalPark Service on March 22, 1974. With a capacity of 102,329, it is the fourthlargest football stadium in the United States and the seventh largestnon-racing stadium in the world.

As early as 1913, Ohio Field atHigh Street and Woodruff Avenue was unable to contain the crowds attracted tomany Buckeye home football games. This led to faculty discussion of moving thesite elsewhere and building a new facility. The growing popularity of footballin Ohio led to the design of a horseshoe-shaped stadium, conceptualized anddesigned by architect Howard Dwight Smith in 1918.

The stadium was completed in 1922by E. H. Latham Company of Columbus at a total cost of $1.49 million. Thestadium\'s original capacity was 66,210. Upon completion, it was the largestpoured concrete structure in the world. Many university officials feared thatthe stadium would never be filled to capacity.
