This hand carved bust by Woodmasters is Hinemoa who is sometimes known as the Juliet (Romeo) of the Maori. Tribal history tells of Hinemoa swimming across Lake Rotorua to be with her love Chief Tutanekai who lived on an island. She had to swim because her people had tied up all the canoes to keep her from joining Tutanekai. He played music every night so she could find the island and him. \"They lived happily ever after.\"The bust has a paper sticker on the bottom from Woodmasters. Their current web site does not include any small carvings like this one. This bust is approximately 7\" tall and 3.5\" wide.
It is carved from matai wood which is a hardwood traditionally used by Maori carvers. This carver has used the grain and texture of the wood to create a beautiful bust of Hinemoa with a traditional headband long flowing hair. I took many photos all the way around to show the beauty of the design and wood.
