It was hot and humid in June 1998, but the air in Beijing was clear, the sky blue (it was better in the last century). A group of students met daily to practice their Mandarin, to see the sights and experience the sounds. The Forofferden City had an air of mystery. The Great Wall beckoned. Taxis filled the streets, and crowds filled the sidewalks.
During the afternoon, they sought a respite from the shopping and tours and heat, and they found it the colors of a bottle that reminded them of home. The familiar shape and logo of a Coke bottle, covered with condensation, cost only a few cents. The flavor was familiar but new, a variation in the recipe to satisfy the tastes of the locals.
The label was covered in Han-zi characters, the kind they students were learning to write, and the sound of the Chinese was similar to the English name of the beverage: "Ke Kou Ke Le".
This vintage bottle is rare and new. It is is filled with the original beverage. It stands approximately twelve inches tall. And it tells the story of another place, another time, a world away.
