Born in Paris in 1626. Orphaned early, she was raised by her maternal uncle. Married at 18 to the Marquis de Sévigné, field marshal, a dissipated man, she remained a widow at 25, with a son and a daughter.
She rejected all the marriage proposals that her beauty attracted to her.
She married her daughter in 1669, to Monsieur de Grignan, who was appointed governor of Provence. Thus removed from her daughter, she addressed her “these Letters so full of sensitivity, naturalness, grace and playfulness, which we admire as the model of the genre”.
She died of smallpox in 1696, alongside her daughter whom she herself had just saved from a serious illness.
