HAND-MADE METAL PEYOTE CROSS WITH 2 NAJAS

This listing features an unusual folk art wall hanging that combines 2 powerful Native American religious symbols, a pair of najas (upside-down crescent moons) dangling from a Christian cross. While najas are usually associated with squash blossom jewelry, the crescent moon also plays an important role as a mounded dirt altar for peyote ceremonies conducted in sweat lodges. Crescent Moon Peyote religions are highly controversial but remain sacred and are still practiced

by many tribes today. Though much of the early mysticism associated with this religion has grown cloudy over time, strong elements of early Christianity were added along the way. Research did not find any other crosses exactly like this one and it may have served as a private family altar. There's a good chance it's a one-of-a-kind art piece.

The cross is tin or aluminum and measures 12 1/2 inches tall by 9 1/4 inches wide with a loop on the reverse for hanging. There is a 1 1/8 inch medallion similar to a small concho firmly attached to the front of the cross. Both najas are convex and measure just under 1 1/2 inches in diameter. This piece is 100% metal, hand cut, hand stamped, and hand constructed with the signature, “JRL99” engraved in script on the reverse. The “99” probably indicates 1999 as the date it was made. There are no formal records for this metal artist but the stamping looks Dine to me — I could be wrong — please let me know if I am.

In vintage condition, there is mostly surface wear all over the cross and najas, but no serious damage. Those interesting surface scratches and imperfections are part of the patina, which I think of as character. It’s also covered with plenty of fingerprints, nothing a serious polish wouldn't remove if the new owner prefers.

This fascinating piece could not help but be one of the highlights in any Native American cross collection.
