I have decided to do some downsizing of my significant collection of Napoleonic French light cavalry sabres and related swords and epees.
Up for sale, a Napoleonic officer of the French Imperial Guard epee. Possibly from a general, at the least of a chef de batallion, a major or a colonel. It has the Imperial Eagle; only worn by Imperial Guard officers.This is an early Empire epee by style, my knowledgeable guess is from the 1805-1810 period, tending closer to 1805.This sabre was purchased at sale in France around 2015.
It is in overall very good condition; The brass parts are excellent with no damage or loss and crisp engravings including a dog's head (or possibly lion's head) quillon; the wooden grip is excellent. the blade is somewhat stained, and is missing the bluing and most of the gold and the engraving is not very deep, likely due to ancient polishing. It is also pitted towards the tip as shown in the photos.The scabbard is in very good to excellent condition, the brass parts are intact with really nice and crisp. The leather of the scabbard appears to be original and in great shape; the wooden inserts have broken in 1 spot.Length of the blade: 30.5" Overall length: 39"A tremendous piece of history, in overall very good condition.This epee is guaranteed to be all original (with the possible exception of the leather as described above) and to be at least 215 years old. It's hard to tell with leather (especially blacked leather) if it is the original.
