The Hell Gate Bridge (originally the New York Connecting RR
Bridge, or East River Arch Bridge) is a 1017-foot steel through-
arch bridge in New York City. The bridge crosses the Hell Gate,
a strait of the East River, between Astoria in Queens and Man-
hattan. It’s an inverted bowstring truss bridge with four spans.
The Tyne Bridge in Newcastle, England, and the Sydney
Harbour Bridge in New South Wales, Australia, derived their
designs from the Hell Gate Bridge. Andy’s dramatic rendering
underscores the towers’ height, suggesting its similarity to
Paris’ Arc de Triomphe, and depicts a New Haven RR EP-5
electric taking a passenger train across the iconic bridge as
it might have looked in the 1950-60s “McGinnis era.”
