New York Times, Friday Nov 29, 1929. Complete, Two sections 44 pp. 23 x 17 ¾. Large headlines “COMMANDER BYRD OFF ON FLIGHT TO THE SOUTH POLE; RADIO REPORS “ ALL IS WELL” AT 6:30…” Most of the front page, and the nest two pages are involving Byrd’s Flight.

Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr. an American naval officer, was a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, and organizer of polar logistics. Aircraft flights in which he served as a navigator and expedition leader crossed the Atlantic Ocean, a segment of the Arctic Ocean, and a segment of the Antarctic Plateau. In November 1929, Byrd participated in a privately financed expedition, where he headed the inaugural aircraft crew that successfully flew over the South Pole. As a result of his achievement, Byrd was promoted to the rank of rear admiral by a special act of Congress on December 21, 1929. As he was only 41 years old at the time, this promotion made Byrd the youngest admiral in the history of the United States Navy.
