A wool \"mukuk\" container with Wabanaki double curve design - ALL hand-sewn/hand-finished by Pam Cunningham, Penobscot master basketmaker. - The shape of Pam\'s wool mukuk was taken from the shape of birch bark containers made by NE & Woodland tribes to hold food, maple sap and syrup and so much more. (See a photo of a birch bark mukuk - 2nd to last photo in slideshow above)Pam Cunningham is a well known, greatly respected Penobscot basketmaker whose baskets in various forms are beloved by many. Pam Cunningham is unrestrainedly creative - she makes so many different items and is interested in nearly everything wanting to learn more about it all! ----- For some time Pam has turned her interest to wool - wool felting, wool dying, wool rug hooking - all things wool.
Here her interest in wool has melded with her interest in her heritage. - The Double Curve on the front of this small wool mukuk is a design used by all 5 tribes of the Wabanaki Confederacy (the Abenaki, Maliseet, MicMac, Passamaquoddy and Pam\'s tribe, the Penobscot). Pam tells me that this double curve with the trifoliate center is the Penobscot symbol for \"Brown Ash\" . Brown ash figures in the Wabanaki creation myth ... Glooskap shot an arrow into the brown ash tree splitting it which allowed the people to emerge from the ash tree\'s center. ....... The brown ash is the traditional material from which the Wabanaki make their baskets.
This is Pam\'s smallest size wool mukuk It is about 2\" square on bottom and 2.5\" diameter top. The outside is natural white wool with a deep rose pink double curve design at front center and a scalloped top edging of the same rose wool at the top... The top has been secured with hand stitching and the rose pink edging has beautiful little embroidery \"knots\" of burgundy embroidery thread to secure it, The inner lining is of black wool. The wool is hand-dyed.
To shape this wool container Pam uses the method her ancestors have used for centuries to make the birch bark \"mukuk\" containers. A mukuk has a square bottom and a round top... as does this. This shape is made by cutting the right shape (birchbark or wool) and folding it to a round shape at the top and securing the sides then folding the extra material left on the bottom (this \"extra material) is rounded and securing it to the sides ... this makes square bottom and round top ...
