If the KC-97 Stratotanker looks familiar, there's a reason. It's based on the B-29 bomber design and used many of the same components. Boeing, however, added a lower lobe to the fuselage to increase transport capacity. The "G" variant was unique in that it came fitted with external wing tanks and a new arrangement of internal refueling tanks. This meant it could carry troops or cargo without removing refueling equipment.
