History

Neighbourswas created by Australian TV executive RegWatson.Watson got the idea for Neighboursfrom his time working on Crossroadsand watching fellow soap CoronationStreetin Britain. He had already created successful Australian made soapoperas TheYoung Doctors,Prisonerand Sonsand Daughters.Watson proposed the idea of making a show that would focus on morerealistic stories and portray teens and adults who talk openly toeach other and solve their problems together. He also wanted the showto appeal to both Australian and British audiences. Several titleswere discussed, including PeopleLike Us,OneWay Street,NoThrough Roadand LivingTogether, before Neighbourswas chosen. Watson said \"In the end it came down to being whatit is, a story around neighbours.\" Reporters from the HeraldSunsaid that Watson took his idea to the NineNetworkin 1982, but it was rejected. He then went to the SevenNetwork, who commissioned the show in September 1984. The serial went intoproduction that November with an $8millionbudget. The show\'s initial premise focused on three families, made upof 12 core characters, living in Ramsay Street, dealing with everydaylife with humour and drama. The first episode was broadcast on 18March 1985 and reviews for the show were favourable. However, theMelbourne-produced programme underperformed in the Sydney market andSeven announced on 12 July 1985 that it was cancelling the show.

Neighbourswas immediately bought by Seven\'s rival NetworkTen.The new network had to build replica sets when it took overproduction after Seven destroyed the original sets to prevent therival network obtaining them. Ten began screening the series withepisode 171 on 20 January 1986. In 1986, the series was bought by theBBCas part of their new daytime schedule in the United Kingdom.Neighboursmade its debut on BBC1on 27 October 1986 starting with the pilot episode. It soon gained aloyal audience and the show became particularly popular with youngerviewers, and before long was watched by up to 16millionviewers– more than the entire population of Australia at thetime. In 1988, Neighboursbecame the only television show to have its entire cast flown over tothe UK to make an appearance at the RoyalVariety Performancein front of the Queen.Neighbourshas since become the longest running drama series in Australiantelevision and the seventh longest running serial drama still on theair in the world. In 2005, Neighbourscelebrated its 20th anniversary and over twenty former cast membersreturned for a specialepisode, which saw the characters sitting down to watch a documentary aboutRamsay Street and its residents. At the Logie Award ceremony thatyear, the show was inducted into the LogieHall of Fame.

In2007, the show underwent a revamp, which included a switch torecording in HDTV,the introduction of a new family, the departure of several existingcharacters and a new version of the show\'s theme song and openingtitles. In addition, episode titles were abandoned, having been inuse for the previous three years. Daniel Bennett, the new head ofdrama at Network Ten, announced that the crux of the Ramsay Streetstory would go \"back to basics\" and follow a lesssensational path than of late with the emphasis on family relationsand suburban reality. Executive producer Ric Pellizzeri said newwriters, actors and sets would bring the soap back to its glory days.He added \"We moved too far into event-driven stories rather thanthe character-driven stories that made Neighbourswhat it is\". The relaunch failed to attract more viewers inAustralia. Pellizzeri left the series at the end of 2007 and formerNeighboursscriptwriter, SusanBower, became the new executive producer. In 2008, Neighbourswas branded \"too white\" by black and Asian viewers inBritain and in Australia there was talk of a \"WhiteAustralia policy\"when it came to casting actors for soaps. In response to thecriticism, Bower made a decision to add more ethnically diverseextras, small walk on roles and speaking parts, as well asintroducing the character of SunnyLee(played by Hany Lee) an exchange student from South Korea.

On18 March 2010, Neighbourscelebrated its 25th anniversary. Bower said \"Lastweek I saw episode 6,000. This marks Australian television history. The 6,000th episode falls on a Friday so the whole week is a specialone. As Stefan Dennis– Paul Robinson– was in thefirst episode 25 years ago, it was decided that his character play amost important role in this very special event\".

Inlate 2010, the TVTonightwebsite reported Neighbourswas to reduce crew operations in 2011 so production could beupgraded. The changes meant that the locationmanagerand catering team were no longer required, studio shoots would bereduced from three cameras to two, and locationshootingwould be restricted. Of the changes, FremantleMedia said \"Neighboursis undergoing a work flow upgrade to accommodate advances intechnology and production techniques to ensure we are at theforefront of professionalism and efficiency.\" They added thatthe show\'s production model had been in place since 1985 and that itwas time to evolve it. On 14 March 2011, TheAustralianreported that Neighbourshas become the first television show available to watch on a freeiPhoneapplication. Viewers are able to watch whole episodes within threehours of them airing on Eleven. Nick Spooner, the head of Ten digitalmedia said \"This is part of what we call our \'three-screenapproach\'– broadcast, online and mobile– and it isintended to build viewer engagement with a show and our brand. Thisis a way for us to stay in touch with our audience and to keep themcoming back.\" To celebrate the weddingof Prince William of Wales and Kate Middleton,Neighboursfilmed a specially commissioned scene for the UK episode airing onthe same day as the wedding. On9 October 2017, Stewart Clarke of Varietyreported that Channel 5 and FremantleMedia had agreed a new deal thatwould see the yearly episode count increased from 240 to 258, as wellas plans for new primetime specials. The deal meant that from 2018,Neighbourswould run across the full year for the first time in its history, including over December and January. Herbison stated, \"We valueour global audiences and are delighted to stay on this journeytogether. Come the end of 2018 we will also make history by becomingthe first Australian drama series to screen all year round.\"Following the departure of SonyaRebecchiin 2019, actor EveMoreystated that the killingoffof her character was a measure to reduce production costs for theprogramme as part of its new negotiations. When the cast and crewreturned from their annual production break on 13 January 2020, theyfilmed a scene addressing the Australianbushfiresfor the episode airing on 15 January. Production shut down early for the scheduled Easterbreak before resuming after four weeks on 27 April 2020, makingNeighboursthe first mainstream scripted show to resume production during thepandemic. In order to adhere to government guidelines andsocial-distancing, Neighbourscreated separate areas to spread out the cast and crew. They removedintimate scenes between characters and editing allows producers togive the illusion of large crowds and groups. Daily temperaturechecks for cast and crew will also be carried out. Herbison said thatthe pandemic would not be included in storylines. He stated, \"Weare currently plotting episodes that won\'t air until much later inthe year, so anything we write now might feel very outdated. Furtherto this, there\'s a creative question: will our viewers want to switchon Neighboursand relive it again, or is our job to provide escapism? I tend tofeel it\'s the latter.\"

InFebruary 2022, it was announced that Channel 5 would be dropping theserial from its schedule later that year, and that production wouldcease if an alternative British broadcaster was not secured. Inresponse to the threat to the series\' future, a fan-run petition onChange.orgasking Channel 5 to reconsider its decision was launched, which wassigned by over 50,000 people, including cast member LucindaCowden. The petition reached 50,000 signatures after one week. Drama on free-to-air television is dying a rapid death becausenowadays viewers are used to being able to watch what they want whenthey want. Ultimately, Neighbours is a product in the big business offilm and television and like any other business, if a product isn\'tmaking money, it will make way for one that will. All TV shows cometo an end – even the likes of long-time legends such as CoronationStreetand Daysof Our Liveswill eventually cease. Popularityand viewership1985–1990s

Neighboursinitially aired on Seven Network where it struggled to attract highratings leading to its cancellation by the network four months afterit premiered. The series was then picked up by Network Ten. After theusual break in broadcast over the summer non-ratings period, theseries made its debut on Ten in 1986. Ten revamped the show, addingseveral new, younger cast members including JasonDonovanas ScottRobinsonand KylieMinogueas CharleneMitchell. When the show began on Ten it initially attracted low ratings, so theNetwork worked hard to publicise the series. Ten\'s publicity drivewas designed to promote the show in a star-focusedcampaign recalling that of the Hollywood star system where stars werepackaged to feed into a fan culture. This paid off and by the end of1987 ratings had improved for the show. The episodefeaturing Scott and Charlene\'s weddingachieved the highest ever ratings for Neighboursand it became one of the highest rating soap episodes ever inAustralia. The same episode attracted 19.6million viewers whenit was aired in the United Kingdom.

Bythe early 1990s, Australian audiences had decreased although viewingfigures had recovered slightly by the end of the decade. In 1992, dueto the decline in ratings, producers began to overhaul the show towin back viewers. They brought in more \"fresh-faced teens\",moved out older characters and gave some of their parent characters\"un-neighborly [sic]subplots\". Executive producer Ian Bradley said the changes werean attempt to return to the show\'s original concept.
