This moving, eighteenth century two-sided medallion in a brass frame, presumably worn as a personal talisman, was created in Spain or (more likely in my view) the Spanish New World. There are two miniature paintings, one on each side. On one face we see a winged Guardian Angel, one arm upraised in benediction, as the person he is protecting looks up prayerfully. On the other face, I believe we see the Virgin Mary protected by the Trinity -- God the Father on the left, Jesus in the center, and likely the Holy Spirit on the right. I don\'t think this object was ever intended to hang on a wall; rather, it would have been worn or carried by a devout believer, Perhaps the person depicted with the angel, lower right, is a portrait of the owner.

Dimensions are about 3.25 by 2.5 inches. Condition, as you see, is poor. For all that, it is enormously expressive, evoking a human life, likely in the New World, over two centuuries ago, and that believer\'s intense spirtuality. I experience a very strong \"vibe\" as I hold it in my hand. Priced it very modestly for an antique of this age and interest. Shipping within the U.S. will be $9.
