This piece is a fine example of mascaros de coco, or coconut masks. The Nahati people from the Mescala region in Guerrero began making these in the 1950\'s to sell at local markets. The face is made from one half of a coconut shell. Clay and enamel paint are added for facial details. The body is made of painted and sealed canvas. This character would most likely be used in Dia de Los Muertos celebrations. She was purchased at an estate sale from a woman who is a long time collector of Mexican folk art. It is in very good condition with the mask and body fully intact. approx 16\" x10\" x 3.5\" Thank you for shopping with us.
