Mexican Ceramic Pottery MezcalMonkey Playing Guitar

Artes Folklorico presents awonderful Mexican ceramic pottery bottle in the shape of a monkey. The natives of Southern Mexico beganproducing specialized vessels for the mezcal they were producing. They used black clay deposits found near thevillage of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. Monkeys were associated with playful andcrazy behavior, much like what occurs when drinking mezcal. They are referred to as ‘Chango’s mezcaleros’or ‘mezcal monkeys.’ These monkeysrepresent a wonderful example of Mexican folk art. This bottle features a wonderful monkeyplaying a guitar. There is a hole on thetop of the head for a cork. The bottleis quite large, measuring 9-1/2 inches in height, 5-1/4 inches in width and4-1/2 inches in depth. The piece is in excellentvintage condition with no breaks, cracks, or chips, just very minor wear to thepaint here and there (see photographs).A wonderful find for anyone that collects vintage, old or antiqueMexican pottery, ceramics, folk art, Chango’s mezcaleros or mezcalmonkeys.
