Northwest Africa 15581(NWA 15581)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2022 Apr

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK5)

History: Purchased by Mbark Arjdal in April 2022 from a Malian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving,UWSand P. Carpenter,WUSL) Sparse well-defined, mostly porphyritic chondrules containing Cr-magnetite stained by Fe terrestrial hydroxides are set in a fine grained matrix containing stained Cr-magnetite, subcalcic augite, intermediate plagioclase and composite grains of ilmenite+Cr spinel. Minor secondary calcite, barite and Fe oxide are present.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa30.5±0.3, range Fa30.0-30.8, N = 5), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs27.6±1.3Wo0.9±0.4, range Fs26.6-29.2Wo0.4-1.3, Al2O33.1-5.3 wt.%, N = 4), pigeonite (Fs23.8Wo9.6, Al2O33.0 wt.%), subcalcic augite (Fs14.7Wo30.9, Al2O32.2 wt.%), plagioclase (An30.3Or2.5; An50.2Or1.0; N = 2), magnetite (Cr2O33.7-3.9 wt.%, N = 3).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK5).

Specimens: 22.9 g plus one polished thin section atUWB; remainder with Mr. M. Arjdal.

CK5means:

\"Acarbonaceous chondriteof theCK groupthat isanomalousand petrologictype 5.\"

The highlighted words are defined as follows:

carbonaceous chondrite: A major class of chondrites that mostly have Mg/Si ratios near the solar value and oxygen isotope compositions that plot below the terrestrial fractionation line.

CK group : TheKaroonda (CK) chemical group of carbonaceous chondrites, distinguished by abundant fine-grained matrix (~75 vol%), mm-sized chondrules that lack igneous rims, relatively few refractory inclusions, and a high degree of oxidation; most CK chondrites have been metamorphosed to type 4 or higher.

anomalous: Designates meteorites that have been determined to be a member of a specific group, but have certain properties that are unusual or distinctive.

type 5: Designates chondrites that have been metamorphosed under conditions sufficient to homogenize olivine and pyroxene, convert all low-Ca pyroxene to orthopyroxene, cause the growth of various secondary minerals, and blur chondrule outlines.
