Mercury Seven Astronauts All [7] Signed Vintage Sepia Framed Photograph Display:
$9795.00

The Mercury Seven were the group of seven astronauts selected to fly in the Mercury Program. The group is also referred to as the Original Seven and Astronaut Group 1. Their names were publicly announced by NASA on April 9, 1959, Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schira, Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton. On May 5, 1961, Alan Shepard became the first American astronaut to go into space, this was followed by five additional successful missions from 1961 to 1963. Listed for sale is a most coveted photograph signed by all seven Mercury astronauts. The image is the iconic photograph of the Mercury Seven holding a model rocket which was taken at the Dolley Madison House in Washington D.C. on the day they were introduced to the American public. The photograph is signed below by each astronaut as typed, ''Alan B. Shepard Jr'', ''Walter M. Schirra'', ''John Glenn Jr'', ''Virgil I. Grissom'', ''M. Scott Carpenter'', ''Donald K. Slayton'', and ''Leroy G. Cooper Jr.'' The photograph is a sepia which measures 7.25 x 9.50 inches, it has trivial creases top left corner above Grissom's head, it does not touch the astronauts and does not distract and a small crease touching two letters in Virgil. Overall, it is very good condition with expected wear for a 60 plus year old photograph and displays wonderfully. The autographs have been authenticated by Zarelli Space Authentication and the above Letter of Authenticity will accompany the display. Mounted below the photograph is a professionally engraved plaque which reads, ''Project Mercury - The original Seven - On October 7, 1958 NASA Announced a program called Project Mercury. The goal was to put a crewed spacecraft into orbit around the Earth, observe, collect data, and prove that human spaceflight was possible. The NASA selection committee conducted exhausting tests of 508 candidates and released the names of the Mercury Seven astronauts on April 9, 1959. The announcement took place at the Dolley Madison House in Washington, D.C. where NASA administrator T. Keith Glennan introduced the candidates. - The Mercury Seven Astronauts - Alan B. Shepard Jr. Freedom 7 May 5, 1961. Virgil I. Grissom Liberty 7 July 21, 1961. John H. Glenn Friendship 7 February 20, 1962. M. Scott Carpenter Auora 7 May 24, 1962. Walter M. This challenge was answered with the historic flight of Apollo 11''. The display has been professionally assembled as follows, the outer matte is a black swede and the photograph and plaque have been accented with a wood inlay which complements the outer frame. The display has been completed in a quality ornate silver wood frame to the dimensions of 22.00 x 18.00 inches and it is striking. It is a wonderful and iconic example of the Original Seven, authentically signed, beautifully framed and ready to be the center of any astronaut collection.
