The tooth was found in Bone Valley, Florida.

Megalodon, (Carcharocles megalodon), member of anextinctspeciesof megatoothshark(Otodontidae) that is considered to be the largest shark, as well as the largestfish, that ever lived.Fossilsattributed to megalodon have been found dating from the earlyMiocene Epoch(which began 23.03 million years ago) to the end of thePliocene Epoch(2.58 million years ago). The wordmegalodon, acompoundof Greek root words, means “giant tooth.”
Fossil remains of megalodon have been found in shallow tropical and temperate seas along the coastlines andcontinental shelfregions of allcontinentsexceptAntarctica. During the early and middle parts of the Miocene Epoch (which lasted from 23 million to 5.3 million years ago), large seaways separatedNorth AmericafromSouth AmericaandEuropeandAsiafromAfricaand theMiddle East, which likelyfacilitatedmovement from oneocean basinto another. Throughout the Miocene, megalodon distribution expanded from pockets located in theCaribbeanandMediterranean seas, in th of Bengal, and along the coasts ofCaliforniaand southernAustraliatoencompasswatersoff the coasts of northern Europe, South America, southern Africa,New Zealand, and east Asia. During the Pliocene Epoch, however, megalodon’s geographic range contracted significantly, and it wasextinctby the end of the epoch.
