Vintage original 4-Page handwritten letter (no cover) dated May 19, 1949 from young U.S. woman traveling in Amsterdam Netherlands to her family and home in Paterson, NJ area (where she lived until she passed in 2014). We know she was born in Holland in 1924 and emigrated with her parents to U.S. through Ellis Island at age 2. This trip was her first time back to her birthplace. It's quite legible and interesting she traveled by sea on the RMS Nieuw Amsterdam and briefly describes her journey sitting next to a Minister at dinner. But her discussion mostly centers around Amsterdam, its people and sites. She admires the city but comments about the people, 'the people still dress in the traditional Dutch style, but the minute they see that you are a tourist they become very annoying. They are a bunch of beggars.' That said she loves the portable fish stands and musicians playing 'Blond Sailor' (fyi the song was released by the Andrew Sisters in 1945) underneath her window. She threw them a quarter and hoped they stayed a little longer.
