MATA ORTIZ, New Mexico Black Pot bought @ a TAOS Trading Post in early 70's, told early 50's, had papers with, looking all over for now!
Bought this in TAOS at a Trading Post, I am pretty sure the Post is no longer there, at least we didn't see it last year (we go to NM every 2-3 years for a month or so)
There was a rolled up piece of paper with name of maker, name of pot design and a closer approx age, etc..looking for, no luck yet! If any of you NM Black Pot Collectors out there recognize this work please advise.
Searching our files, records for piece of paper, did not have much on it, name of maker, era not much as I remember!
Really well done intricate work, all over even on bottom, sort of geometric, but still native peoples designs, work. Never seen another one, none even close on now, this one is really really well done. We now have 25-30 pieces, Maria Martinez (3) 5-6 by her Grand Daughter Barbara Gonzales, other noted artists.
This piece hold its own with the best we own!! Measures: 4.5 inches tall, by 4.5 inches widethe flared up, then rolls over rim opening is 1.5 inch, no chips, cracks, damage, repairs,really well done, old piece. The essence of small but mighty in design & execution.
