DETAILS: Original pinback button issued by the Milwaukee chapter of the Congress Of Racial Equity (CORE) in support of leader MJartin Luther Kings Freedom Now civil rights campaign. Circa 1966.Button wasdistributed to protest marchers so that they could identify each other as well as toopenly show segregationist that they would not be intimidated by threats of violence. Measures 1 1/4" inches. Rare.

The Milwaukee chapter of CORE was established in 1959 focusing primarily on grass rots organization. However with the rise of the Black Power Movement (PBM)in 1966, they began to employ more militant outward forms of protest demanding the end of segregation in Milwaukee. Joining forces with the NAACP Youth Council (NAACPYC), CORE began organizing regularmarchesacross Milwaukee inpredominantly wealthy white neighborhoods. The groups peaceful protests became so inflammatory to white segregationiststhat bytheir third march on August 22, 1966, in Wauwatosa, they requiredseveral hundred National Guardsman and police to protect themfrom an estimated 4,000 hostile white protesters. Thus began the regularprotest marches and sit ins that took place across Milwaukeeuntil they culminated in th 1967 MilwaukeeRiot.
