Major General Thomas H. Green’s Ike Jacket & More

Thomas H. Green began his army career enlisting in Troop A, Massachusetts Cavalry on February 4, 1913. He saw service on the Mexican Border in 1916 with that cavalry unit. During WWI, he entered the Regular Army as a second lieutenant of cavalry in October of 1917, and went to France with the 15th U.S. Cavalry, one of the two regiments to serve as complete cavalry regiment in WWI overseas. He attained the rank of temporary major. Green served with the cavalry until transferring to the Judge Advocate General’s Department in Washington. (By this time, Gen. Green had been educated at Tufts University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston University (LL.B), and George Washington University Law School, obtaining a master’s degree in law.)

Having served in various departments and commands, Green became the JAG for the Hawaiian Department, where he was on duty from August of 1940 to April. He also distinguished himself performing other duty as the Executive to the Military Governor of Hawaii, this during the time of the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. He received the DSM for services as Executive to the Military Governor Lt. Gen. Delos C. Emmons. He was award his second DSM on October 1945 for his services as Deputy JAG. He was promoted to major general as of 1 Dec. 1945, and remained the Judge Advocate General of the Army until 30 November 1948, then retiring from active duty.

In retirement, Gen. Green worked as a law professor at the University of Arizona until his death in 1971. He was buried with his wife, at Indian Mound Cemetery, Moravia, New York.

The uniform is a contract April 1944 “Ike” Jacket, with sewn-on bullion stars in the rank of major general. The collars are US and JAG, clutch-back insignia. This jacket is probably an earlier Ike, in that the ribbon bars are not fully brought up to full status.

The ribbon bars are for the following:Distinguished Service Medal (w/1olc), Army Commendation (w/3 olc), Mexican Border Service, WWI Victory (w/2 campaign stars), American Defense (w/star), American Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific, WWII Victory Medals. Additional awards added were one more oak leaf cluster for the Army Commendation, and a star on the Asiatic-Pacific medals.Completing the insignia is the Hawaiian Department Patch, and a 2-bar overseas service, being in the Territory of Hawaii.

The inside of the coat has a number of markings and tags. Below the right breast pocket is a“Regulation Army Officers Jacket”label and inside the pocket is a contract and issue tag with size 42R on it. Hand-written inside the coat collar is“T.H. Green”and inside the right arm opening are two separate numbers stamped in ink.

TheCoat is in very Fine+ condition(Shirt & tie for display purpose and not included).Hand-measurements are as follows:

Back collar to hem = 24.75\"
