Muong Nong tektites
Muong Nong tektites or layered tektite glass is not commonly found in any ofthe tektite strewnfield except the Indochinite strewnfield. Much of the MuongNong material has been obtained from bomb craters in Eastern Laos. Based on thespatial distribution of Muong Nong-type tektite sites and the chemicalcharacteristics of the objects, Schnetzler has suggested that the sourceregion is in a limited area near the Thailand/Laos border. More recently, Dassand Glass have investigated the occurrence of mineral inclusions in theMuong Nong-type Australasian tektites and suggested that the Muong Nong-typetektites from Muong Phin, Laos came from a site closer to the source craterthan do other Muong Nong-type tektites. The geographic variation of 10Becontents in Australasian tektites may also provide clues to the location of thesource crater. In all the others this layered glass is found only as a veryrare piece. But, in the younger Indochinite impact region this glass is foundas both large and small masses.
Muong Nong may represent some form of impact melt sheet glass. Large massespresent the appearance of having formed by the repeated flowing of thin layersof molten glass. Building layered by layer a thick sheet which is much morebubbly and much less homogeneous than splash form glass while still beingchemically similar to that of the aerodynamically formed specimens.Most MuongNong specimens have chips on them.
