  • From the internet about this postcard:
Overview of the city of Managua D.N.This photograph taken from above the Loma de Tiscapa, shows a beautiful panoramic of Managua National District (D.N.), possibly taken in the mid-fifties of the last century, when the tall buildings that characterized the city\'s urban landscape were not yet being built late sixties and early seventies. They stand out among the roofs of the old one or two storey houses, the towers of St. James Cathedral (center) and the Church of San Antonio (left). In the foreground, stands out the monument located at the southern top of Avenue Central, designed by architect Basilio Marín and built by the signature Cardinal Lacayo Fiallos. The monument, conceived in 1941 as a tribute to the liberal figures of the time to the then President of Nicaragua, Anastasio Somoza Garcia (1896-1956), was inaugurated five years later, on the morning of February 1, 1946. However, Somoza cededed the building in honor of US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who died serving his fourth term in 1945.At the beginning of the twentieth century, the emblematic artery of the capital, was known as Avenida del Campo, in reference to the Field of Mars, the military zone located at its southern end. She was also known by other colloquial names, but it wasn\'t until January 30, 1942 that it was officially named Roosevelt Avenue. And although in the recent past under political arguments it was renamed as Avenida Pedestrian Gral. August C. Sandino, in the popular imaginary, continues to flaunt the name with which he was known until that fateful December 23, 1972.The avenue of just thirteen blocks, whose vehicle traffic went from north to south, went from the shores of Lake Xolotlán, passing through Plaza de la Republic to the Loma de Tiscapa. Always brimming with pedestrians and vehicles, noisy, bright and full of commercial signs, in its golden age Roosevelt Avenue hosted the country’s biggest financial institutions, the capital’s tallest buildings, renowned department stores and all kinds of family businesses, including the famous Great Hotel where the most important international artists from various eras were hosted.Today, Roosevelt Avenue is free pedestrian traffic from Plaza de Republic to what used to be 3 South Street (now Double South), where the passage is restricted because the seats of the Legislative Power and the Vice Presidency of the nation, which occupies the former buildings of the National Bank (National Assembly), Bank of America (offices of parliamentary benches) and the first 4 floors of what was the Central Bank and the Automotive Company (Vice Presidency), plus the Chapel of the La Salle Pedagogical Institute (Olof Palme Convention Center). On the other end, restricted vehicle traffic is still possible between Columbus Street and Roosevelt Monument.Photo credits: Postcard edited and taken by Don Justo Pastor Lopez Rivera, founder of Gallery of Art Studio Photographic, pioneer of color photography in Central America.
