Henry E. Steinway: A life inspired by his passion for pianos

When Henry E. Steinway constructed his legendary Model No. 1 in 1836 in his home kitchen, he was following his vision "to build the best piano possible".

This vision endured through generations and lead to 128 patents since the founding of Steinway & Sons in 1853 in New York.

Many of them, such as Henry E. Steinway's overstringing technique for the grand piano or the rim-bending patent covering the process of shaping the curved wooden grand piano rim, are still standard piano building principles today.

His passion for music also lead Henry E. Steinway to become the founder and patron of the "Steinway Hall' erected in 1866 - the first and largest concert hall in New York at the time - and to become a passionate supporter of extraordinary talents, laying the cornerstone of the artist-promotion program "Steinway Artists", still highly valued today.

The Limited Edition is inspired by the essential components of a classic grand piano. Made of 750 white gold, the skeletonised fountain pen expresses these traditional features on a highly precious level, with dark brown ebony inlays representing piano keys on the barrel.

A subtle, three-dimensional pedal design ornaments the cone of the writing instrument. As a reference to the name standing in equal measure for quality, innovation and passion, the "Steinway & Sons" signature is engraved on the cone ring.

The great interest in his work shown by the public, as well as the receipt of his first awards, fueled Henry E. Steinway's enthusiasm to continue perfecting the art of piano building. At the age of 53 he emigrated to America with his sons, founding the company Steinway & Sons in New York in 1853.

The cornerstone was laid for a legend that would endure through two turns of the century.

Today, Steinway instruments have as strong a reputation as ever for unique and unmistakable sound. Concert pianists and music lovers all over the world continue to bow before the achievements of the most famous piano building pioneer of all time: Henry E. Steinway.

As a tribute to the Edition's namesake, the hand-crafted white gold nib is engraved with a silhouette of a grand piano.

Keys that move the world

While still barely settled in New York, Steinway & Sons were already establishing new standards in piano building.

The company received 35 awards before 1866 for great constructive innovations - including the cross stringing technique developed in 1859 by Henry E. Steinway.

Over the following generations, the number of Steinway patents accumulated to 128. Many of the early ones, such as the overstringing technique and the rim-bending patent covering the process of shaping the curved wooden grand piano rim, helped determine the shape and basic construction techniques of the classic grand piano - and still serve today as firm principles of traditional piano building.

As a reference to the milestones of Steinway & Sons, a 750 white gold piano frame decorates the skeletonised cap of this Limited Edition. The shape of the clip, which is adorned with a diamond, recalls the patented screw clamps used for bending the grand piano rim into a sweeping curve.

A music patron with a mission

Henry E. Steinway personally drove every advancement of his instruments towards perfection, but at the same time he wanted to pass on his enthusiasm for music to as many New Yorkers as possible.

He was deeply involved in the founding of the Steinway Hall in Manhattan, erected in 1866 as the first and largest concert hall of its time in the city: a concert hall with outstanding acoustics equipped for a symphony orchestra of 100 and an audience of approx. 2,500. In addition to its role as concert hall, the Steinway Hall was also a viewing and sales room. This combination was a historical success - also on the other side of the ocean. Appearing first in London, then followed by other great cities of the world, Steinway Halls served as cultural meeting places for international musicians and music connoisseurs.

In the same way, the idea of the "Steinway Artists" grew out of Henry E. Steinway's great support of extraordinary talents. With this program Steinway & Sons accompanies, even today, numerous selected artists who perform on a Steinway instrument throughout their musical life journeys.

Engraved on the cap ring is a geometric design inspired by the decor of the Steinway Hall in New York.

The Montblanc emblem on the cap top, made from mother of pearl, completes the design of the Limited Edition fountain pen created to honour the world's greatest pioneer of piano building: Henry E. Steinway.
