DESCRIPTION:Offered for your review and consideration is this very scarce, mid to late 19th century American folk art, schoolgirl artifact, found in a rural southern Vermont early estate. It\'s most likely this decoupage decorated lidded pine box, with a front keyhole and lock assembly, was made prior to the US Civil War or during the period of the war and up until the mid-1870\'s. Southern Vermont was still quite rural and the Connecticut River was largely responsible for the northward flow of mercantile goods to the early American settlers and homesteaders, who had made their homes and farms there. This box was discovered west of Brattleboro, Vermont and is a wonderful schoolgirl produced artifact. American schoolgirls would often pursue the decorative arts as a sign of their privileged educational cultivation, piety and good schooling. They would often study penmanship, mono and polychromatic chalk drawing (referred to as sandpaper painting) theorem painting, needlework and other handcrafts. There\'s a slight, small episode of ephemera/lacquer loss on the back of the box. A wonderful American schoolgirl artifact, now some 150 to 175 years old.Very scarce.
