MID 19TH CENTURY RED HOUSE & MOTIF SAMPLER BY MARY OWEN AGED 13 - 1867:

Mid 19th century sampler by Mary Owen aged 13 - 1867. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central fruit tree with a flower to each side of its topmost fruits which then have a crown flanked by a lion above. The fruit tree has a bird standing to both sides, each with a tall floral motif above and a flower basket beside them. The flower baskets have a bird and butterfly to each side of their topmost bloom and a tree by the basket itself. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with an impressive three storey red house with an annexe to each side, both with a set of railings to the front. Both annexes have a rose above with a diamond, fruit basket and flower beside the left side rose and a heart, fruit basket and flower beside the rose on the right. Mary's details and the date of 1867 are contained within the lower section of the gauze with a crown, dog and bird to the left and right of the date followed by a floral urn and butterfly. The whole piece is then surrounded by an acorn border.There is stitch loss to both lower corners of the sampler and one is able to see that the gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age. There are also some visible tack marks around the edges. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool look good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also the odd stitch missing to the outer acorn border. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original bird's eye maple frame with late gilt slip. Both are in good condition with the slip retaining much of its original gilding and the frame with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age plus a few old losses to the veneer.. There is also a small loss to the inner detailing on the lower bottom right side edge.
PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large piece measuring 17 1/4" across x 16 3/4" (sight size) & 21 3/4" x 21" including the frame.
