Partly Printed Document Signed: \"Richd Varick\" as Mayor of New York City, 1p, 8x12¾. New York, New York, 1795 March 7. In full: \"Be It Remembered, That on the Seventh Day of March in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety-five; before me, Richard Varick, Esquire, Mayor of the said City, personally appeared Nicholas Cook of the Seventh Ward of the said City, Inn holder and acknowledged himself to be indebted to the People of the State of New-York, in the Sum of Fifty Pounds, lawful Money of said State, to be levied of his Goods and Chattels, Lands and Tenements, for the Use of the People of said State, if Failure shall be made in the Performance of the Condition following: Whereas the said Nicholas Cook on the Day of the Date hereof - hath obtained a Licence (sic) to keep an Inn or Tavern for retailing strong or spirituous Liquors in his Dwelling-House, in the said City, from the Date of the said Licence (sic) until the first Day of March next. Now, the Condition of this Recognizance is such, That if the said Nicholas Cook do (sic) not, during the Time that he shall keep Inn or Tavern, keep a disorderly Inn or Tavern, or suffer or permit any Cock-fighting, Gaming, or Playing with Cards or Dice, or keep any Billiard-Table , or other Gaming-Table, or Shuffle-Board, within the Inn or Tavern by him to be kept, or within any Out-House, Yard or Garden belonging thereunto; then this Recognizance to be void, else to remain in full Force. Taken and acknowledged the Day and Year above-written, Before me\". Varick was Mayor of New York City from 1791-1801. During the Revolutionary War, Richard Varick (1753-1831) was Military Secretary to General Philip Schuyler until after the Battle of Saratoga. Appointed Inspector General of West Point, Varick became Aide-de-Camp to General Benedict Arnold and was examined by a court of inquiry after Arnold\'s defection. Completely exonerated, Varick then served as General George Washington\'s Recording Secretary until the end of the war. His public service included terms as Recorder (Judge) for New York City (1783-1789) and Attorney General for New York (1778-1789), and Varick served in the New York State Assembly from 1786-1787. Lightly creased with folds, light horizontal fold at the upper loops of the \"R\" and \"d\" of Richard and the \"V\" and \"k\" in Varick. Irregular edges, lightly shaded at blank left edge. Minor show through of docket on verso (not windowed to show verso). Overall, fine condition. Framed, not in the Gallery of History style: 17x28.
