The nobleman who served Great Britain as a colonial administrator in India sent this note to a famous sculptor
Third-Person Autograph Letter signed twice in text as "Lord Wellesley", One page. 7¼x8¾. Richmond (England), no year, February 2. In full: "Lord Wellesley presents his compliments / to Mr. Chantrey, and informs him that Mr. / Johnston has been compelled to attend / his mother at a considerable distance / from London, where she has met with a / severe accident, by which she is confined / to her bed. Mr. Johnston\'s affectionate sense of / duty will probably detain him for some days; / On his return, he will be happy to attend Mr. / Chantrey. In the mean while, Lord Wellesley / would be glad to know whether he may now / see the bust." Richard Wellesley (1760-1853), 2nd Earl of Mornington, Marquis of Wellesley, served as Governor-General of India from 1797-1805. Wellesley\'s objective was to expand British rule in India, so he concluded alliances with weak native rulers and attacked and defeated the Tipu Sultan of Mysore, annexing lands on both the east and west coasts. Wellesley also conquered the Carnatic on the east coast and large areas around Bombay on the west coast and attacked the Mahrattas in the second Mahratta War (1803-1805). Sir Francis Chantrey (1781-1841) was a celebrated sculptor whose subjects included Lord Nelson and Queen Victoria. Lightly creased. light vertical folds. Show through of mounting glue (barely visible). Slightly irregular left edge.
