The Company was established in the mid 1860’s by Phillip Danforth Armour and John Plankinton, Armour and Company was a meat packing business that by the turn of the century had grown into one of the largest companies in the United States. Many of those sales derived from the processing of all the parts of the animal - “everything but the squeal” - making such products as glue, lard, gelatin, and fertilizer.The laboratories created many of these derivative products and these bottles are examples from the late 1890s.
There were a variety of products that used these bottles so the label would have been different on them.Here we have 3 bottles from the labs. There are two sizes of the square. The larger is 4” tall and 1 ½” across. The smaller is 3 ¼” tall and1 ¼” across. Both are embossed “ARMOUR LABORATORIES CHICAGO” in a nice oval frame. The large one has a messy flaw in the glass on the shoulder that makes it very interesting. Both have rolled lips with some visible flaws consistent with 1890s production. Both are in dug condition with some hazing inside and out.The round one is far less common. It stands 3 ½” high and 1 ½” in diameter. It has the same embossing with a square collar lip. It has some heavier haze on the front with additional haze inside. There is no other damage.
The three make a very nice set of artifacts from this amazing Chicago company.
