Long discontinued, the Lie-Nielsen No. 9 1/2 block plane is a 20º "Standard Angle" plane with an adjustable mouth. The movable shoe in front of the blade allows you to easily and precisely adjust the mouth opening: a fine mouth for finishing work and thin shavings, or an ample opening for rougher cuts.

The ductile iron body is flat and square to a tolerance of .001" or better and is resistant to damage from drops and bumps. The large, comfortable bronze cap is tensioned with a 1-1/2" brass wheel, and the blade is adjusted with a captive nut for precise control with low backlash.

The 25º angle blade is bedded at 20º, yielding a "standard" 45º cutting angle for average work. An additional 25º angle blade is being added either as a spare or to provide an option to allow high cutting angles to be achieved by sharpening to a higher angle. For example, if the edge is honed to a 35º microbevel, when combined with the20º bed angle the plane then is able to cut at a high angle of 55º. This can provide better performance with difficult grain (curly or bird's eye) and reduce tear-out. See the Lie-Nielsen documentation for further long, 1-3/4" wide
