Dear Brother,
It is a long while since I have had a letter from you, but I conclude you are safe and sound. There has been no mail from Hatteras since Jay had a letter from you. I mailed a letter for you from J a few days ago. There is various stories about the 8th Regt. Some say that they were at Hatteras at the time of the battle on Roanoke Island, but according to the Tribune correspondent, they were in the reserve on the island. I soon expect a letter from you today, as the Eastern State has arrived from Hatteras, although there was nothing said about a mail being brought. We are to celebrate Washington’s birthday some today. There is to be a meeting in the Congl Church, where there will be some speaking, some singing, and Washington’s farewell address will be read. It was intended to have some firing of cannons and money was raised to pay for powder but some few Whitefeather on secession Democrats, owners of the gun, objected to it’s being used. You can imagine what kind of Democrats they were such as Dr. Taylor, Fred Richmond, Geo McMahon, and that chap Bostwick, and those were willing it should be used, and Henry Bostwick was very much offended because it could not be had.I had not sent you the Enquirer lately as it will be such old news when you get it I concluded you would not care much about it but if you still wish it, I will send it to you.The body of ____ T. Boonson Was brought up on the cars here yesterday, and taken over to Roxberry where his parents reside. He was an only son, and they feel his loss very much. He died of diphtheria on the New Brunswick.Ellen beach is still here and will probably be for a week or two longer. Our folks are all as well as usual.
Your Aff Brother,A.G. Ferriss
