Dear Brother,
This is the last day of the old year, and what an eventful year to ourselves into our country! A year ago we did not think that such a severe trial was upon us, that our brothers and our friends should be called to defend the peace, which we had so long been blessed with, that the “flag of our union” should____ in the dust throughout half the country, but so it is. God, in all his wise providence, has so ordered it for our benefit by punishing us for our national sins, that we may be purified by the fires of affliction, and we may come out a truer and better people. But I am moralizing. I will drop that and talk of things that may be more interesting.I am sorry that you do not find your flute, but it must be there somewhere. If it is not found the Express Co. is liable for the amount. I enclose the certificate of the company. Keep the certificate until you find the flute.I presume you get all my letters as I did not write from the 18th until the 25th, a weekI also wrote on the 27th. I expect that Henry and Ellen will return NY today and they are to be at Clark Hines this evening where they have a little family gathering. Although I do not belong to the family, I am invited I suppose on account of the past I have taken previously. Elijah Bennett has a party tomorrow evening to which I am also invited. We are having sharp winter weather. Now in the skating is good. I am close you a photograph of
Your Aff Brother,
A.G. Ferriss
