This great piece of memorabilia is a leather bound photo album with an inlaid silk image of Marines storming a beach in the Pacific and painted with the Marine logo and the title: Service Album U.S.MARINES. The cover also has the name of the veteran who compiled the album George Siegenfuss 1945-46. Inside the cover on the first page is the emblem for WWII US Marine Corps Ships Detachment and a photo of the ship on which this Marine served: The USS Los Angeles (CA-135) which was a Baltimore class heavy cruiser laid down by the Philadelphia Naval Yard on July 28, 1943 and launched on August 20, 1944. and commissioned on July 22, 1945. George Siegenfuss served in the Marines from July 11, 1945 to October 6, 1946. So he was on the ship when it it sailed for the Far East via the west coast and arrived in Shanghai on January 3rd, 1946. The Los Angeles operated for the next year with the 7th Fleet along the coast of China and in the Western Pacific to the Marianas. i believe Private Siegenfuss was with the ship at least through its service in China given that there are many photos of Shanghai and the surrounding area in this album. He belonged to the U S Marine Corps Ship Detachment whose duties on large warships (including aircraft carriers, cruisers and battleships) included: protecting the ship's captain, security and defense of the ship, operating the brig, limited shore action, and ceremonial details. Some of the photos show some of this service. Included in this album are many photos taken of life on the Los Angeles, time ashore in China, photos of what is probably Siegenfuss's father, sweetheart/ wife and new baby. Its' a poignant of memorabilia at the a soldier's service at the end of WWII with the relief of peace and the joy of homecoming.
The album includes 126 original photos, 3 postcards, an autograph page page for the veterans's friends and fellow soldiers, a membership card to THE SACRED ORDER OF THE ROYAL DRAGON, 29 post-service photos of a camping vacation, two Marine Corps Identification card (including one that affirms Private Siegenfuss's sevice during WWII), and a few later newspaper articles.
