Provenance: Private Collection, United KingdomA beautiful late 17th Century North European Small Sword with possible inscription "RO" on fuller but very rubbed. The sword shows Classical Greek imagery on the guard, Quilon block and pommel. The scene on the guard shows two men conversating while the scene on the pommel shows a man lost. The scenes could be portraying some Hellenistic allegory on ignorance and knowledge. The small sword is wonderfully wire-bound with its original plaited brass wire binding between collars, brass hilt cast including asymmetrical shell-guard, globular Quilon (left knuckle-guard missing as shown).
