For your consideration: a superb vintage Hannya Demon Noh-men Noh Kagura Mask, hand carved from heavy wood in Shimane, Japan.Figuring prominently in Japanese folklore, Hannya demons are often depicted in traditional Noh and Bunraku plays using fierce and grimacing horned wooden masks. Hannya mask are used in many noh and kyōgen Japanese plays, as well as in Shinto ritual kagura dances. They are said to be demonic and dangerous but also sorrowful and tormented, displaying the complexity of human emotions. Hallmarks: Not signed.Dimensions: The mask is 12 3/4" tall and 8" wide.Condition: Excellent vintage condition (some minimal signs of wear, consistent with age - see close-up pictures)
