The Pic du Jer is a summit in the Hautes-Pyrenees,located 3,120 ft above the city of Lourdes and is recognizable by itsbig cross lit up at night. The mountainis accessible by funicular, which has been in operation since 1900. It transports passengers on a 3600 ft longroute, on a slope varying from 27%. Thereare several paths at the higher station that lead to the summit.

Lourdes is a market town that rose toprominence due to the “Marian Apparations” claimed to have been seen by the peasantgirl Bernadette Soubirous, who was later canonized. Shortly thereafter the citywith the “Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes” became one of the world’s mostimportant sites of pilgrimage and religious tourism.
