THEFATHER OF MICROBIOLOGY AND BACTERIOLOGY ESTABLISHED THAT DISEASES WERE CAUSEDBY MICROORGANISMS. HE THEN SOUGHT TO IDENTIFY AND FIND A MEANS OF FIGHTINGTHEM. HIS FINEST ACCOMPLISHMENT WAS RABIES. HERE IN THIS LETTER HE CORRESPONDSWITH JEAN-AIME BOURREL (1822-92), THE PARIS VETERINARIAN AND EXPERT ON CANINERABIES, WHO PROVIDED PASTEUR WITH THE DOGS SUFFERING FROM RABIES, WHICH ENABLEDHIM TO UNDERTAKE HIS WORK ON THE DISEASE. BOURREL HOUSED AND OBSERBED DOGSVACCINATED BY PASTEUR THEN TESTED THEM IN THE AIM OF ASSESSING THE QUALITY ANDDURATIONOF ACQUIRED IMMUNITY. LOUISPASTEUR (1822-95) HANDWRITTEN LETTER SIGNED,“Pasteur”,one page, 5.25 x 8.25, stamp-dated June 5, 1884, written to veterinarianJean-Aime Bourrel, 7 Fontaine-au-roi, Paris, who worked with Pasteur on thestudy of rabies. Pasteur, the French chemist and microbiologist, is renownedfor his discoveries of the principle of vaccination, microbial fermentation,and pasteurization. He developedvaccines for rabies and anthrax,and is one of the founders of modern bacteriology. He is also one of thefathers of the germ theory of disease andis best known to the generalpublic for his invention of the technique of treating milk and wine to stopbacterial contamination, a process now called pasteurization.The letter is in French (with full translation),In Part: “Appointment made. Commission at your home today at 5:30am.” Below Pasteur’s signature is some docketing/billing information by Bourrel’soffice.

For some time Pasteur conducted studies on rabiesand he gathered dogs as laboratory specimens. And, just a few months beforethe date of this letter (February 25, 1884), Pasteur and two other scientistsannounced the discovery for a treatment on rabies in dogs and cats to the French Academyof Science, which appointed a study commission to assess the method’sefficacy. The method for treating raoffer dogs was deemed conclusive andapproved. However, despite the satisfactory results with dogs, Pasteur fearedtesting it on humans. Just one year later he successfully inoculated thefirst human against rabies.

Heestablished the Pasteur Institutionin 1887 and was the director until his death. This historic letter is in finecondition, with the usual letter fold lines, scattered small ink stains, andminor age toning. It comes with a JSALetter of Authentication. #13070ZORAB
