Description: Here's a wonderful collection of three antique / early vintage homemade candy boxes from the Sabbathday Lake Shaker commmunity in Maine. Examples of each of these are in From Shaker Lands and Shaker Hands by M. Stephen Miller, which says they are from the second half of the 1900s.
They include:- A large, thin box with a graphic design of the Sabbathday Lake Meeting House, built in 1794. It's marked, "Shaker Society - Homemade Sweets - Sabbathday Lake Maine - Net Weight Half Pound." The paper is textured and shiny, a bit "fancy".
- An unusual long, thin Peppermints box. It also has a graphic design of theSabbathday Lake Meeting House, and marked Shaker Home Made - Chocolate Peppermints - Net Weight Half Pound."It was sealed with a green Sabbathday Lake logo sticker. I haven't ever had this box before and have only seen examples in reference books.
- A folded 1-piece box marked, Shaker Society - Homemade Candies - Sabbathday Lake - Poland Spring Maine - Net Weight One-Half Pound. It also was sealed with a green Sabbathday Lake logo sticker.
Since these boxes were meant to be disposed of and are somewhat fragile, they are hard to find, especially in good condition. These three display nicely as a group to represent this particular Shaker industry, and are a great addition to your Shaker or candy advertising collection.Condition: All are in very good vintage condition; the Peppermints box has some staining, and the Large Sweets box has very minor staining. (See photos.)
