The British statesmen writes a third person note thanking person for a new book of poems in black ink
Third person autograph letter: "Lord John Manners" in black ink. 1 page, 4½x7¼ folded. Written on personal Belvoir Castle letterhead. Grantham, England. January 15, 1880. In full: "Lord John Manners presents his compliments to the kind common Inc. court for the handsome volume of poems he has been so kind as to send, with which he hopes to make speedy acquaintance". John Manners, 7th Duke of Rutland (1818-1906), known as Lord John Manners before 1888, was an English author and statesman. Born the younger son of the 5th Duke of Rutland, Manners wrote two books of poetry after attending Cambridge titled "England's Trust and Other Poems" (1841) and "English Ballads and Other Poems" (1850), the former which contained his famed quote "Let wealth and commerce, laws and learning die. But leave us still our old Nobility". A die-hard Tory, Manners was part of the romantic nationalistic Young England movement which was led by Benjamin Disraeli; he sat in the House of Commons from 1841 to 1888, when he ascended to the House of Lords after inheriting his brother's dukedom. He served as the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (1886-1892), Postmaster-General (1874-1880), and was awarded Knight of the Garter (1891) and the Baron Roos of Belvoir (1896). Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Toned. Corners and edges rounded and creased. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.See more material from these signers:LORD JOHN MANNERS See more listings in our FORIEGN LEADERS (811) category.
