During the filming of the adaption of Exodus, the author wrote this "letter to the editor" praising an article by future Pulitzer Prize-winning historian John Toland
Typed Letter signed: "Leon" and "Leon M Uris" in black ink, 1p, 7¼x10½. Hollywood, California, 1959 October 6. On letterhead of Columbia Pictures Corporation to Bill. In full: "Although tempted many times in my short and ignoble career to do this, I have never succumbed. For obvious reasons I would like to address this letter to the Letters to the Editors department through you. Honest Bill, there are no strings attached to this. I have just finished reading the particular article below mentioned and have rarely, if ever, been stirred by anything quite so much in my life. Do with it what you will." Beneath his letter to Bill, Uris has typed his "Letter to the Editor". In full: "For the past five years I have been subjected to some abuse and some praise through the mails by the public at large. Although tempted many times to either damn or praise an article I have read, I have never until this time submitted to that urge. I have just finished reading \'Untold Stories of World War II\', \'The Reluctant Warriors,\' by John Toland. It is a hell of a story. The tragedy of this story is that one Nikita Khruschev will never get to read it. For this is the story of the greatness of America. The ability of American youth, deceptively mild, mistakenly taken for weak, able to rise to mighty, mighty heights when the occasion demands. It is, in essence, the story of the strength of the American people when put to task. As an ex-Marine I am naturally reluctant to give even faint praise to the Army, Navy, or Air Corps, but my hat\'s off to the men of Fox Company." At the time he wrote this letter, Uris was in Hollywood during the filming of Exodus, which was released in 1960. Uris was credited as being "Book Author" on the film, which was one of the top grossing films of 1960 and won an Academy Award for Best Drama or Comedy Score and was nominated for two other Oscars: Best Supporting Actor (Sal Mineo) and Best Color Cinematography. John Toland (1912-2004) would win the 1971 Pulitzer Prize for The Rising Sun: The Decline and Fall of the Japanese Empire 1936-1945, but he was best known for his 1976 work, Adolf Hitler: The Definitive Biography. Toland had served in the Army Air Corps before becoming a freelance journalist. The article mentioned in Uris\' letter was published in the October 13, 1959 issue of "Look" magazine. Soviet Premier Nikita Khruschev had visited the U.S. in September 1959, so would have missed the article. LEON URIS (1924-2003) wrote eleven epic novels, including Exodus (1958), Topaz (1967), QB VII (1970), Trinity (1976) and Redemption (1995). His large-scale, action-filled novels often depict courageous individuals caught up in major events of modern history. Before Uris became a novelist, he was a member of the United States Marine Corps, enlisting soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in the South Pacific from 1942-1945. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Faint paper clip rust stains at upper left blank margin, pencil lines under "Dear Sirs:" and at lower margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
