After his career as a naval officer in theKriegsmarine, he entered the diplomatic career of theFederal Republic of Germany. He was the highest-ranking survivor of thebattleship Bismarck.In May 1941, he experienced thesinking of the battleship Bismarckas fourth artillery officer with the rank oflieutenant commander, thereby becoming the highest-ranking survivor of the ship.He was rescued by the British cruiserDorsetshireand after initial detention in England, was transported to Bowmanvilleprisoner of war campin Ontario, Canada.Postal Cover signed by the above.Cover was posted in 1976.
