LARGE RARE Vintage Hippopotamus Tobacco Jar:

I have a large collection of my Father\'s tobacco jars that I am down sizing. I\'m not sure if this is a tobacco jar or what as it is quite large. It measures 9 1/2\" tall X 5 1/2\" X 6\". It is in excellent condition for it\'s age. There is a chip on the bottom of the lid (see photo).
It is ceramic on the face and the body feels like a painted leather or fabric.
So, some of you smart collectors may tell me what this is if it is not a tobacco jar.
